What Is SS-DAB?
Small Scale DAB (SS-DAB) is a new initiative by the UK government and industry regulator (OFCOM) to open the DAB Digital Radio spectrum to a new tier of small scale broadcasters looking to offer unique, local community focused radio stations operating on the DAB spectrum.
For the first time in a generation, new broadcasters in the UK will have potential access to 'over the air' radio 'slots on local multiplexes with each multiplex offering up to 20+ new stations to a town or area of a city.
So if you want to launch a digital radio service coving your local area, you will have two options:
- Apply to run your own SS-DAB multiplex - This route involves a detailed application as well as a substantial investment in equipment and infrastructure, but once you are an multiplex operator, you can put your own station(s) on the multiplex and sell surplus capacity to other local broadcasters - For more detail see the OFCOM Website.
- Approach a local multiplex operator to purchase a slot on their multiplex - If there is already a SS-DAB multiplex in your area then you could approach the operator to see if they have spare capacity and if so, whether they are willing to provide you with a slot (they will likely charge you for this!).
The SS-DAB project is currently in the early development stage (although it is fully approved) so the situation may change regularly. We would recommend you keep a close eye on the OFCOM website for the latest details.

- IP Audio Codec - IP Audio Codecs provide a direct, real-time and bi-directional audio link between two or more sites using standard data networks.
